My Role: Illustrator
Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is a novel that takes place in rural Victorian England, featuring two neighbors, Heathcliff and Cathy, and their dysfunctional families.
Both love each other, but due to circumstances, neither could be friends. While both lived in beautiful estates on open fields and lands, both Cathy and Heathcliff always felt trapped by the turmoil, expectations, and mistreatment by their families.
The Illustration in Depth
Visually speaking, the wrought iron gates in Victorian England generally belonged to estates and the upper class. With a wrought iron gate, one can see through the other side, just like Heathcliff and Cathy were always in close proximity and could literally look across the lawn. However, the gate symbolizes both the idea of wealth, lands, and status, while also symbolizing the feeling of Catherine’s and Heathcliff’s internal imprisonment.
