Bonnie and Clyde Valentine's Day Box

1st Place Packaging Award | Juried by the Hallmark Design Team

Hosted by Tyler School of Art

My Role: Packaging Designer, Copywriter

Goal
As a student my brief was to design a themed Valentine's Day Box.

After much research and ideating, I thought of Bonnie and Clyde and decided to challenge myself as a designer to bring in elements of the 20th century with a deep nod to the movie, historical textures, and special small details that fandoms and history buffs would appreciate.

Result
Below is my Valentine's Day Box, which was awarded first place in a packaging competition from Hallmark.

The box is dedicated to Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the infamous criminal couple who robbed banks in the American Midwest in the 1930s during the Great Depression.

Process
I carefully measured and wrapped the entire box in Epson paper and Artist Tac.  I used Photoshop and Illustrator to create everything from the chocolate money packaging for the candy bars, the collage well that holds the coins to the clever messages inside the wells.

Details

I used real images from the press of Bonnie and Clyde and some of the images from the movie Bonnie and Clyde (1964).

It was very important for me to capture the same energy that Bonnie and Clyde had historically, and on the silver screen.

I was going for a jagged, rugged, violent kind of feel, the feeling of meeting a mobster in a nice suit and sophisticated yet dangerous. This box is designed for the fandom, as if it were a box Clyde would give to Bonnie.

All the wells purposefully have a message inside so that when someone lifts the chocolate bar, there is a reference to their historical story and movie.

When someone looks closely at the wrappers of the chocolate bars and the tiny words on the necklace holder, these moments are thoughtfully designed into the packaging, from a brand, packaging experience, and copy perspective. For me, it was very important to keep the box well thought out and still full of surprises.
